The National Emergency Briefing for Law launched a new climate conversation. We can no longer delay and defer – we need action to put climate and nature at the heart of decision making across the legal profession. At the briefing, we made three clear calls to action:

BARRISTERS AND CHAMBERS
Head to the Bar Sustainability Network to find resources to support chambers and barristers become climate skilled. As well as a bespoke online tool to measure carbon emissions, the BSN provides toolkits, training and support.
Bar Council and specialist Bar Associations – the BSN is working alongside professional associations to ensure we embed the climate science and evidence into decision making.
Greener Litigation is a well established network of over 100 members spanning Chambers, Private Practice and the Courts. The GLP works to improve climate awareness and action across litigation practice, tackling court bundling, AI and awareness within the judiciary.
Greener Litigation is home to the Greener Litigation Pledge, signed by over 140 members from across the legal profession.
The Nature and Climate Panel aims to strengthen the Bar Council’s ability to understand and respond to the legal, ethical and practical implications of the climate crisis by promoting climate aware and environmentally sustainable practice across the profession. It also seeks to develop the profession’s understanding of how climate change and other environmental issues interact with core duties, practice areas, client needs and the public interest.

On Extreme Weather - Prof Hayley Fowler
Professor of Climate Change Impacts at Newcastle University
Hayley Fowler is one of the UK’s leading experts on extreme rainfall and flooding. Her research advances understanding of how precipitation extremes are changing in a warming world and develops improved projections to guide climate adaptation. Hayley was recently awarded the prestigious Royal Society Faraday Discovery Fellowship for "exceptional mid-career research leaders" to further her work on extreme weather.
On Energy - Tessa Khan
Executive Director of Uplift and Energy Transition Expert
Tessa Khan is a lawyer and campaigner and the founder and Executive Director of Uplift, an organisation that works towards a just transition away from oil and gas in the UK. Before founding Uplift, she was co-founder and Co-Director of the Climate Litigation Network, which supports strategic litigation around the world.
On Tipping Points - Prof Tim Lenton OBE
Chair in Climate Change and Earth System Science, University of Exeter
Professor Tim Lenton OBE has more than 25 years research experience, focused on modelling life’s coupling to the Earth system, biogeochemical cycles, climate dynamics, and associated tipping points. Tim is world-renowned for his work identifying climate tipping points, which informed the setting of the “well below 2°C” climate target. Recently he has highlighted the opportunities for positive tipping points to accelerate social change towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions and global sustainability.
On National Security - Lt General Richard Nugee
Senior British Army Officer (retired)
Lieutenant General Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE is a former senior British Army officer and leading voice on climate and national security. His 35-year military career included operational tours in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, where he served as Chief of Staff to NATO’s ISAF Joint Command. He later became Chief of Defence People and was awarded the US Legion of Merit.
On Nature - Prof Nathalie Seddon
Founding Director of the Nature-based Solutions Initiative and The Agile Initiative at the University of Oxford
Nathalie Seddon is Professor of Biodiversity at the University of Oxford. A former Royal Society University Research Fellow and recent recipient of a prestigious Marsh Award for Ecology, she trained as an evolutionary ecologist at the University of Cambridge and has over 25 years’ experience working across ecosystems worldwide.
On Financial Markets - Ido Eisenberg
Head of Responsible Investment at Quilter
Ido Eisenberg has more than 20 years’ experience in investment management and sustainability. He is Head of Responsible Investment at Quilter, where he leads the development and implementation of the firm’s approach to sustainable investing. Prior to joining Quilter, he advised asset and wealth managers on sustainable finance and regulation, and spent nearly two decades as an equity investor at J.P. Morgan Asset Management.
